UK riots latest: Protests bring Belfast to ‘complete standstill’; more than 700 arrests across country
King ‘greatly encouraged’ by ‘community spirit’ after riots – and sends message of thanks to police
The King has been “greatly encouraged” by the “many examples of community spirit that had countered the aggression and criminality from a few” in recent days, Buckingham Palace has said.
A spokesperson said the monarch has been making calls throughout the week over the disorder seen across the UK.
He also held a phone audience with the prime minister this evening, as well as a joint call with the chairman of the National Police Chiefs’ Council and UK gold commander.
“In these calls, His Majesty was updated on the current situation and expressed his heartfelt thanks to the police and emergency services for all they are doing to restore peace in those areas that have been affected by violent disorder,” the spokesperson said.
“Additionally, the King shared how he had been greatly encouraged by the many examples of community spirit that had countered the aggression and criminality from a few with the compassion and resilience of the many,” they added.
“It remains His Majesty’s hope that shared values of mutual respect and understanding will continue to strengthen and unite the nation.”
Sky News understands that it remains the hope that once circumstances are right, the King wants to be able to show his concern and support in a more direct way – which could involve a visit of some kind.
