Trump says he’s open to striking quid quo pro deal with RFK Jr: Live updates

Donald Trump claims polls are fake and that suburban women actually do like him after all

Donald Trump could be about to take independent presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr up on his offer to suspend his campaign in exchange for a role in a prospective Trump administration.

Asked about their flagging campaign out-spending donations, Nicole Shanahan, RFK Jr’s running mate, told the Impact Theory podcast: “There’s two options that we’re looking at. One is staying in, forming that new party but we run the risk of a Kamala Harris and Walz presidency because we draw votes from Trump.

“Or we walk away right now and join forces with Donald Trump.”

Trump appeared receptive to the idea at his latest low-energy campaign event in Michigan on Tuesday.

Ostensibly themed around crime and safety, the Republican’s speech inevitably veered off course into other topics as he once again found himself failing to stay on-message.

Repeating his familiar tropes on immigration, Trump also claimed that suburban women actually like him, blaming a “fake poll” for suggesting otherwise, because he had prevented low-income tower blocks from being built in the suburbs and kept illegal migrants out.

He also claimed, hysterically, that people risked rape or death if they crossed the street to buy bread in American cities.

Trump’s ex-press secretary appears at DNC to endorse Harris and reveal ‘basement dwellers’ slur

Also at the DNC, Stephanie Grisham, who held her White House role from July 2019 to April 2020, was one of several Republican figures invited to the convention to denounce the “extremism” of the Republican former president and his campaign.

During her remarks, she told attendees that Trump mocks his supporters behind closed doors, calling them “basement dwellers.”

“I wasn’t just a Trump supporter. I was a true believer,” Grisham reflected.

Michelle Obama eviscerates Trump over ‘Black jobs’ remarks

Over at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, the Obamas were in town on Tuesday to promote Kamala Harris and trash Trump.

The 44th president said of his Republican successor’s ambitions for a return to the White House: “We have seen that movie before, and we all know that the sequel is usually worse.

“Here is a 78-year-old billionaire who has not stopped whining about his problems since he rode down his golden escalator nine years ago. There’s the childish nicknames, the crazy conspiracy theories, this weird obsession with crowd sizes.”

The former first lady meanwhile hit Trump on his absurd “Black jobs” claims:

Trump, for his part, was uncharacteristically gracious about the Obamas yesterday.

Here’s Andrew Feinberg with more.

Barron Trump will go to college in New York this fall

The youngest son of Donald Trump will be heading to a college in New York this fall, the former president has revealed.

“He is going to announce it soon,” Donald Trump told The New York Post at a campaign stop in Michigan on Tuesday.

“He’s all set in a certain school that’s very good.

“It’s in New York, and he’s always been a very good student,” Trump added.

“He’s smart, and so we’ll be letting you know very soon.”

The 18-year-old could choose from any number of top universities in New York City, including Columbia, New York University, as well as Cornell in upstate New York.

Barron graduated from high school in Florida in May.

Truth Social: Trump attacks Kamala on environment and threatens to prosecute Democrats

Here’s Trump’s latest ravings against Harris on social media, now taking on an environmental theme, a particularly ridiculous claim from a climate change sceptic whose mantra on fossil fuels is: “Drill, baby, drill!”

Incredibly, and presumably in reference to the racist riots that exploded in Britain earlier this month in response to the murder of three young girls at a dance studio in Southport, the Republican presidential nominee writes: “Net Zero Lunatics are currently destroying the Economies of many other Countries, including the U.K.

“Their Radical, Self-Destructive Policy has led the U.K. to the Worst Economic Growth since 1780, now causing Economic Chaos, Destruction, Riots, and Death in the streets of British Cities.”

Truly, truly despicable – and beyond ignorant, if you don’t mind my saying so.

Elsewhere, in addition to cheering a slate of primary wins for Republicans he endorsed, including Matt Gaetz and Anna Paulina Luna, Trump threatens to prosecute “Democrat Operatives and Sleazebags” over election fraud.

War, weapons, and wokeness: Trump’s rambling, low-energy speech on ‘law and order’

Trump made another low-energy campaign stop in Michigan on Tuesday.

Ostensibly themed around crime and safety, the Republican’s speech inevitably veered off course into other topics as he once again found himself rambling and failing to stay on-message.

Donald Trump rambles about wokeness during speech on ‘law and order’

Donald Trump delivered a rambling speech in Wisconsin on Tuesday, 20 August, in which he claimed “World War Three” is “very close.” The former president was due to deliver remarks on “law and order” at the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office in Howell. He claimed that “the Marxist left has waged a vicious war on law enforcement” and “taken away the dignity and spirit” of police officers. Later on in his speech, Mr Trump turned round to police officers standing behind him and asked them to promise they would “never be woke.”

Trump could strike quid quo pro deal with RFK Jr

Donald Trump could be about to take independent presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr up on his offer to suspend his campaign in exchange for a role in a prospective future Trump administration.

Asked about their flagging campaign out-spending donations, Nicole Shanahan, RFK Jr’s running mate, told the Impact Theory podcast: “There’s two options that we’re looking at. One is staying in, forming that new party but we run the risk of a Kamala Harris and [Tim] Walz presidency because we draw votes from Trump.

“Or we walk away right now and join forces with Donald Trump.”

Asked about the prospect in Michigan yesterday, Trump said of RFK Jr: “I like him, and I respect him.

“He’s a brilliant guy. He’s a very smart guy. I’ve known him for a very long time.

“I didn’t know he was thinking about getting out, but if he is thinking about getting out, certainly I’d be open to it.”

ICYMI: Trump slams Biden DNC address as ‘angry and ranting Speech full of LIES’

Donald Trump has lashed out after President Joe Biden delivered his address at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago last night, passing the torch to party presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris.

The former president wrote on Truth Social this morning:

An angry and ranting Speech full of LIES, Biden took credit for everything done during the Trump Administration, even continuing to say that he was better on Inflation and Jobs. He never mentioned the Afghanistan Disaster and all the Wars he got us into, or the fact that far more people died from COVID during the Biden years than the Trump years. The Jobs Biden/Harris “created” were almost 100% from Illegal Aliens pouring into our Country, which are destroying the lives of our Black and Hispanic population!

Biden’s speech closed out a boisterous and enthusiastic first day of the convention. You can read Andrew Feinberg and Alex Woodward’s coverage of the president’s remarks below:
