The UK airport with security queues so quick you ‘have to run to keep up’
We’ve all been there: you get to airport security and somehow, you’re the only efficient human in the entire room.
How hard is it to put your liquid items in a bag, you wonder. Just take everything out of your pockets, you think. Is it uncalled for to start screaming, you ponder.
But f you’re looking for a stress free experience, Edinburgh Airport has heard your cries of frustration. In fact, you can clear their check in an average of 10 minutes or less.
The airport in the Scottish capital, which has more than 14 million people travel through it each year, prides itself on its quick service, and it seems travellers are just as happy.
Taking to Reddit, AshScot50 called them ‘brilliant’: ‘Edinburgh Airport Security is brilliant. They have so many lanes and so many staff directing the flow that you almost have to run through the lanes to keep up.’
While Darren Seaton wrote on X: ‘Edinburgh Airport breezed through security in 10 mins.’
‘They are excellent at Edinburgh airport,’ Jeff Leyton wrote on the social media platform. ‘Great breakfast, too,’ he added.
Travellers aren’t the only ones who are impressed with the airport, either. According to aviation magazine ADS Advance, Edinburgh has ‘one of the quickest security queues in the UK,’ alongside Glasgow and London City.
So what makes them so fast? Speaking to Metro, a spokesperson for the airport said it comes down to multiple factors, including clear signage, areas for passengers to get ready for security, live update technology and dedicated family lines.
Located at the entrance of the security hall, the family-only area is perfect for those with young children, buggies, additional carry-on baggage, and staff on hand for extra support.
As for the live updates, they are availble at all times on the airport website and are perfect for those who like to plan ahead or to put you at ease – or help if you’re running late.
‘Our teams work hard to ensure the journey through security is as smooth as possible for all passengers. So far this year, more than 92 per cent of passengers were through in less than ten minutes,’ the spokesperson said.
It’s an impressive achievement for the airport, which has managed to increase the number of passengers going through security in less than 10 minutes by 12 per cent in just over two years.
In August 2022, as they opened their borders to the world following the Covid-19 pandemic, the airport, on average, had 80.4% of passengers going through the security hall in 10 minutes or less, while 94.3% were through in less than 15 minutes.
‘By preparing well, and following the current rules, passengers can get through even quicker and avoid any unnecessary delays,’ they added.
To ensure this happens, the airport recommends travellers only carry liquids 100ml or less and remove large electronics like laptops from their bags.
Believe it or not, Edinburgh Airport also plans to make its process even faster ‘with work to install new scanner technology in our hall is ongoing.’ But until this is complete, they suggest passengers prepare to go through security as normal.
So, with flights starting from just £34 return next month from London and accommodation starting from £54 per night, could it be time to check out the airport, and the iconic city for yourself?
After all, with Christmas markets and New Year celebrations in full swing, the city is never more sparkly than it is this time of year.
