Southend ranks as one of the best cities to retire in UK – here is why
Communications company Moneypenny conducted the research to whittle down the ten best places for retirees to settle down.
The research found the city to be the seventh best city in the UK based on a ranking of 25 of its most populated cities.
The research considered indexes for the average rent, utilities, cost of living, green spaces, number of fitness clubs, number of cafes, and number of golf courses.
Dan Marshall, group head of digital at Moneypenny, said: “We understand that retirement is more than just relaxation.
“By considering factors such as cost of living, green space, and variety of amenities, we hope to provide a guide that helps retirees find a location that meets their lifestyle preferences and ensures a fulfilling and well-earned retirement.”
The study also found that Southend has the cheapest utility costs out of all cities in the ranking – averaging £128 a month.
The city scored an index rating of 3.9, compared to Belfast’s rating of 4.9.
Belfast was ranked as the best city, while Leeds took second place, and Bradford rounded out the top three.
Belfast was found to have the best of both affordable living spaces and a variety of activities to take part in.
Leeds highest numbers of recreational activities for retirees to take part in – with this including 21 gold courses.
While Bradford has some of the cheapest costs in terms of monthly outgoings for retirees, with rental costs averaging at £531.67 per month and utility costs averaging at £219.36 per month.
