Paris Saint-Germain became Ligue 1 champions for the 10th time in 12 seasons on April 28, 2024, after Monaco’s defeat to Lyon meant they could no longer catch the leaders in the title race.

It meant Kylian Mbappe had now won seven top-flight titles in France — six for PSG and one for Monaco — by the age of 25. There was one more to come in 2024 via the Coupe de France final, although the UEFA Champions League once more eluded him.

That cup final with Lyon was Mbappe’s last chance to win silverware with PSG. On May 10, he announced he would be leaving the club at the end of the season. A little under a month later, Real Madrid confirmed the news the world had been waiting for: they had signed Mbappe on a free transfer.

In his first game for his new club, Mbappe added another trophy to his collection, scoring in the 2-0 victory over Atalanta in the 2024 UEFA Super Cup. The forward would not have had it any other way, as he continues to rack up personal awards and team trophies with plenty of career left in front of him.

Mbappe’s meteoric rise in French football started with an incredible first full season at AS Monaco, as his 15 league goals inspired them to the 2016/17 Ligue 1 title.

That persuaded PSG to make their move for the striker, at the start of 2017/18, as part of a €145m transfer deal to sign him ahead of Real Madrid.

Mbappe was the main man for PSG since then, despite the arrival of Lionel Messi and the presence of world-record signing Neymar in Paris. Indeed, those two other superstars left in 2023.

The striker won six of a possible seven Ligue 1 titles with PSG, alongside four Coupe de France titles, two Coupes de la Ligue — the now-defunct French league cup — and three Trophees des Champions.

After joining Real Madrid in July 2024, he marked his debut for the club with a goal as they won the UEFA Super Cup match against Atalanta.

Mbappe scored four goals as France won the 2018 FIFA World Cup, missing out on the Golden Boot award to Harry Kane, but he became the youngest player to score in a World Cup final since Pele.

Les Bleus were unable to repeat the trick in 2022, as Deschamps’ holders lost to Messi’s Argentina in the Qatar showpiece match, despite Mbappe scoring a dramatic hat-trick en route to winning the Golden Boot in the Middle East.

Mbappe’s form for PSG has seen him win a string of personal awards, including five Ligue 1 Golden Boot awards and four Player of the Year prizes.

As Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo edge towards retirement, Mbappe looks increasingly certain to add a Ballon d’Or gong to his list of accolades, in what could become a career battle with Erling Haaland.
