Experts name six Cumbrian pubs in top 100 in the UK

The Daily Mail recently recruited a team of experts to narrow down the estimated 45,000 pubs in the UK to just 100 of the very best.

And, the good news for those in Cumbria is that there are six spread across the county, in Brampton, Keswick, Clifton, Barngates, Sedbergh and High Newton.

The Kirkstyle Inn and Sportsman’s Rest between Brampton and Alston is the most northerly pub in Cumbria to feature on the list.

Nestled in the picturesque village of Slaggyford on the borders of Cumbria and Northumberland, The Kirkstyle Inn and Sportsman’s Rest is a gastropub with a rich history and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Next up is The George and Dragon, located in Clifton, just a few miles south of Penrith.

The award-winning pub is beloved by both locals and visitors from further afar and also has 11 stylish rooms to choose from should you wish to extend your stay.

Heading west to Keswick, the Wainwright was perhaps an obvious inclusion on this list.

The traditional, relaxing setting in the town centre is a haven for Lake District walkers and is also dedicated to serving Cumbrian real ales.

As we move into southern Cumbria, the Drunken Duck Inn at Bramgates also makes the list.

Set among the rolling countryside of Lake District National Park, this upscale inn is three miles from the A591 road, and four miles from the Langdale Hotel and Spa.

The Black Bull Inn in Sedbergh is the next to feature on the list created by the Daily Mail.

The pub is on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, offers contemporary accommodation, a stylish bar and a restaurant with a unique menu designed by award-winning chef Nina Matsunaga.

Finally, close to the Lancashire border is Heft at High Newton.

Set in the stunning Lake District National Park, Heft is a 17th century inn in High Newton run by local couple Kevin and Nicola Tickle.
