Double success for curry house named among Britain’s best

An Indian restaurant is celebrating after being named among the country’s best and seeing its head chef pick up a prestigious award.

Shozna in Rochester was named one of the UK’s top 100 restaurants at the Asian Oriental & Chef Awards.

The independent eatery was recognised for its achievements during a grand ceremony held at the House of Lords in London on election day (Thursday, July 4).

The event was hosted by Lord Kamall on behalf of the Asian Catering Federation (ACF) and presented by BBC news presenter Samantha Simmonds.

Head cook Jamal Uddin Ahmed, known by most as Jay, also picked up an individual accolade after being named as the top regional chef for Kent.

“It’s a reflection of all the hard work of my team – it means a lot to us,” he said. “It’s a reflection of the hard work and creativity of our entire team.“

The cook added he is excited to continue delivering dining experiences with a focus on quality and creativity.

George Shaw, Director of Communications at the ACF which organises the awards, added: “Announcing the Top 100 allows us to recognise more of the better venues in the UK.

“Not all restaurant goers want, or can afford to eat in, fine dining establishments, very often – if at all.

“This listing allows customers to also find very good local restaurants.”

In 2021, the Shozna was named best restaurant in the Curry Life Awards.

The following year, chef Jay was asked to represent Britain at a prestigious foodie festival in Bangladesh.

The Indian and Bangladeshi restaurant first opened its doors in 1996 in Strood.

Following its success, a second branch was opened in Maidstone Road, Rochester in 2005 where it is now solely based from.
