Haney too slick for challenger
These fighters met four times during their amateur days with each claiming two wins, but their careers in the professional ranks have followed very different trajectories.
Haney boasts a 31-0 record and is a former undisputed lightweight champion who made the step up to become a two-weight champion by taking down the big-hitting Regis Prograis with a defensive masterclass last year.
Garcia put together a 20-0 record and appeared to be on the cusp of greatness when stopping former Olympic champion Luke Campbell in 2021 to become the interim WBC lightweight champion. That put him on a collision course with the then regular champion Haney, but issues away from the ring led to him stepping away from the sport.
Since then, Garcia has three wins and one defeat from four fights. He fell short in his one clash against elite opposition when he was stopped by Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis in April 2023, but goes into Saturday’s bout on the back of a win over quality opposition in the shape of Oscar Duarte Jurado.
Garcia has 20 stoppage wins in a 25-fight career and has a chance here even if he is rated a 5/1 underdog, with Haney the massive 1/9 favourite.
The most likely outcome, however, is a Haney win on points. ‘The Dream’ is very much a ‘hit and don’t get hit’ type of fighter and doesn’t possess the kind of power that would allow him to end a fight with one punch, with a modest 15 of his 31 wins coming inside the distance.
Haney’s last eight wins have all been by unanimous decisions and he has some huge names on his CV, taking down Vasyl Lomachenko, George Kambosos Jr and veteran Jorge Linares on points during that run. He has enough quality to win this bout comfortably without getting drawn into a firefight, so the standout option is a points win for the champion.
Tip: Haney to win by decision or technical decision @ 10/3 with BoyleSports
Late Haney win a value option
I may be expecting a Haney win on points but anyone looking for a big-price option could be tempted by the 33/1 on offer for the 25-year-old to win in the 12th round.
If Haney is clearly way ahead on points at that stage, then Garcia will need to come out all guns blazing – and that will inevitably give the champion a few chances on the counter.
Haney may not possess awesome power but he still has enough to pull off a grandstand finish if given the opportunity.
Tip: Haney to win in round 12 @ 33/1 with BetVictor
Stoppage the pick for Garcia backers
There will be plenty of people who are attracted to underdog Garcia at 5/1 – and why not? He claimed two wins over Haney in the amateurs and has a decent record, and a loss to the formidable Davis is certainly no disgrace. He is a fighter Haney has perhaps been reluctant to face.
If you are weighing up a bet on Garcia, the best approach is the 9/1 on ‘King Ry’ to win inside the distance. Garcia, also 25, has 20 stoppage wins in a 24-fight career and seven of his last eight wins have come early.
Haney is the superior fighter when it comes to skillset and his defensive qualities mean a points win for Garcia is unlikely, but he will always carry enough power to score a stoppage if he can get his shots away.
Tip: Garcia to win by KO, TKO or disqualification @ 9/1 with BetVictor
