Cotswold bakery named one of the best in the UK

Bakery on the Water in Bourton has been named the best bakery in Gloucestershire at the national bakery awards. 

The owner has put the accolade down to the team’s determination and tenacity when working against the odds. 

Bakery on the Water doesn’t specialise in any particular baked goods but rather serves a wide menu. 

The awards are not only judged on the taste of the baked goods but what customers think and how the bakery is run. 

Alex Clavel, co-owner of Bakery on the Water, said: “We were up against a lot of good competition so naturally we didn’t expect to win as we all work very hard. 

“Over the last year we have tried to level up the bakery and turn it into more of what it was. 

“We have improved our service, quality and the overall feeling which I think culminated in a better guest experience and this award.

“I’d put our success down to our dedication, tenacity and our ability to work against the odds and not being fazed.”

According to Mr Clavel, hundreds of customers have noticed the giant spoon of which the bakery was given and it has become quite the talking point. 

Mr Clavel continued: “We have had lots of support and congratulations from our customers and many have said just how much we deserve the award. 

“Everyone is proud of us, not only for the bakery but what it means for Bourton and the community. 

“It’s our lifelong endeavour to make the best experiences as possible for our guests and we have not been shaken.

“I think our most popular item has to be our cream tea with fresh homemade scones which we make daily. 

“But I think my favourite has to be our lemon drizzle cake which is sublime. 

“It’s made by our pastry chef and I think it’s one of the finest in the world.”

Bakery on the Water has also won, best food and drink business across the Cotswolds at The Cotswolds Life Food and Drink Awards.
