The biggest names in world football will descend upon the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris for the 2024 edition of the Ballon d’Or on Monday.

This year’s event marks a new era, as for the first time since 2003, neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Lionel Messi have been nominated for the award.

Instead, Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior is a front-runner to claim the award for best player of the year, after he helped his club win the La Liga and Champions League.

Also in the running is fellow Galacticos star Jude Bellingham. But there is stern competition from Manchester City’s Rodri and Erling Haaland as well.

Here’s how to watch the 2024 Ballon d’Or in the United Kingdom:

Last year’s ceremony was broadcast on TNT and discovery+ for viewers in the UK but this year that won’t be the case.

Fans can watch the ceremony on DAZN. 

L’Equipe’s YouTube channel will be showing the event on its YouTube channel for free.

The top award for female football players is also not a foregone conclusion.

Last year’s winner Aitana Bonmati is amongst the candidates, but has competition from U.S. star Mallory Swanson and Jamaica striker Khadija Shaw.

A win for Swanson would make her the second American award winner after Megan Rapinoe in 2019.

Kepa Trophy

The Kepa Trophy is given to the top player in the world under the age of 21. It is open to any player across the world, unlike the UEFA-specific Golden Boy award.

It’s considered a virtual certainty that 17-year-old Barcelona superstar Lamine Yamal is a shoo-in for this year’s award, and he is likely to be a frontrunner in coming years too. Still, the likes of Kobbie Mainoo, Arda Guler, and Pau Cubarsi will all be considered challengers in future years.

Yashin Trophy

Given to the best goalkeeper in the world, last year’s winner Emiliano Martinez is thought likely to become the first-ever two-time winner of the Yashin Trophy.

Unai Simon and Giorgi Mamardashvili had excellent seasons, but Dibu is considered the best goalkeeper in the world and had a season worthy enough to prove it.

Gerd Muller Trophy

The Gerd Muller trophy is given to the best forward in the world over the course of a season. Unlike other trophies in this presentation, this award is not given out after a vote, but instead is handed to the top goal scorer for the year.

Established in 2021, Robert Lewandowski won the first two editions before Erling Haaland took home the trophy a year ago. The winner won’t be announced until the ceremony, but it’s expected that Cristiano Ronaldo will be the victory, although Harry Kane and Haaland could be in the running.

Socrates Award

The Socrates Award is presented to the footballer whose humanitarian contributions are worthy of recognition.

This year’s nominees are Vinicius Jr for his work helping underprivileged Brazilian children get access to education, Antonio Rudiger for his charitable work in Sierra Leone, Alex Morgan for her efforts in the fight for equal pay, Asisat Oshoala for founding the Oshoala Academy in Nigeria, and Marcus Rashford for his work fighting childhood hunger in the UK.

Club of the Year Award

The Club of the Year award is given to the team which has the most exemplary season, whether it be overall results or results compared to expectations.

This year’s nominees are Borussia Dortmund, Girona, Bayer Leverkusen, Man City, and Real Madrid. While Real Madrid had the best overall season in terms of final trophies, having won the La Liga and Champions League double, there’s a push for Bayer Leverkusen to be the winner after an unbeaten domestic season, winning the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal, while reaching the Europa League final as well.

Coach of the Year Award (men’s/women’s)

A Coach of the Year award will be given out to both a men’s and women’s winner.

On the men’s side, the nominees are Xabi Alonso (Bayer Leverkusen), Carlo Ancelotti (Real Madrid), Luis de la Fuente (Spain), Gian Piero Gasperini (Atalanta), Pep Guardiola (Man City), and Lionel Scaloni (Argentina). There are a number of worthy winners in here, but like the club award, there’s a push for Xabi Alonso to win for his exemplary work at Bayer Leverkusen.

For the women, the nominees are Sonia Bompastor (Lyon/Chelsea), Arthur Elias (Brazil), Jonatan Giraldez (Barcelona/Washington Spirit), Emma Hayes (Chelsea/USA), Filipa Patao (Benfica), and Sarina Wiegman (England). Hayes is a strong candidate having won the Women’s Super League with Chelsea and then the Olympics with the United States, but there are a number of potential winners amongst this group.
