Joe Biden calls for ban on gun used in attempted assassination of Donald Trump

Joe Biden delivered an energetic and passionate speech to the NAACP meeting in swing-state Nevada on Tuesday afternoon, firing up the crowd by mocking Donald Trump’s references to “Black jobs” by citing the roles of Barack Obama, Kamala Harris, and Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson at the highest levels of government

The president has sat for interviews in the wake of the assassination attempt on his Republican rival, including taking a combative tone with NBC on Monday, but the speech in Las Vegas marked his return to the campaign trail.

Biden was especially strident about how the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 manifesto would negatively impact people of color.

Nevertheless, following his woeful performance in the first debate against Trump, senior Democrats including former House speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep Adam Schiff are reportedly convinced he will lose and want him off the party’s ticket to stave off electoral disaster in November.

Meanwhile, Trump has also returned to the campaign after he was clipped in the right ear by gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks, whose motives remain unknown. At the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, the newly confirmed GOP nominee announced his running mate is Senator JD Vance of Ohio.

Scalise says Trump was ‘one of the first’ to console his family after his 2017 shooting

US House majority leader Steve Scalise – who was himself the victim of a “politically motivated” shooting – said that while he was in hospital, Donald Trump was one of the first to console his family.

During practice for the 2017 year’s Congressional Baseball Game, Scalise was shot and seriously wounded by an anti-Trump domestic terrorist who was targeting Republicans.

The Louisiana congressman underwent treatment for several months, returning to Congress on September 28 that year.

Scalise gave remarks at the Republican National Convention (RNC) on Tuesday night, ending by paying tribute to the former president.

“Lastly, I need to say something about Saturday’s attempt on President Trump’s life,” he told convention attendees.

“Many of you know I was the survivor of a politically motivated shooting in 2017 not many know that while I was fighting for my life, Donald Trump was one of the first to come console my family at the hospital.

“That’s the kind of leader he is – courageous under fire, compassionate towards others. Let’s put Donald Trump back in the White House this November. So, we can make America great again.”

Inside the unlikely romance of JD Vance and wife Usha Chilukuri Vance

They were paired as writing partners for their first major assignment at Yale Law School – a striking high-achiever daughter of immigrants and a Marine veteran “hillbilly” who could trace his family’s Scots-Irish roots back generations in the Appalachian mountains.

It may sound trite and corny, but Usha Chilukuri and JD Vance truly came from vastly different worlds. And they fell in love in yet another – at an East Coast Ivy League across the country from Usha’s childhood California home and across a gaping cultural divide from her future husband’s Rust Belt hometown.
